In the southern sector of Bwindi forest is Nkuringo gorilla family located in Nkuringo side. It is located on the Kisoro side of Bwindi national park. The road has been reconstructed and is now one of the accessible gorilla families. From Kampala the main capital of Uganda, the drive takes about 10 to 11 hours if interrupted by any stopovers especially at the equator and the lunch break. However it is scenic drive as you pass the rolling hills of Kisoro. In 2004, this group was opened for gorilla tracking group.
Locally, “Nkuringo” means a round hill where it was first spotted and habituated from. At the time of habituation, the group was under the leadership of Nkuringo as the dominant silverback. Later, Safari and Rafik the sons of Nkuringo took over the greatest responsibility of the group as his father was aging. Nkuringo later died in 2008 as he got weaker and weaker because of old age .
