Placed on the western arm of the Rift Valley is Queen Elizabeth National park. This park occupies an area of about 1978 square kilometers between lake Edward and Lake George. This park forms part of the extensive system of contiguous protected areas such as Kyambura Wildlife Reserve at 154 squares kilometers, Kigezi at 265 Square kilometers, Kibale National Park, Rwenzori National Park  and Virunga National Park in D.R.Congo.

These crater lakes are punctuated on the floor of the rift valley towards Rwenzori ranges. Some of the outstanding crater lakes in Queen Elizabeth National Park including Lake Nyamunuka which emits a putrid smell, Katwe salt lake one of the prehistoric mining industries in Uganda. Salt has been extracted from this lake using evaporation beds as method that is still used to date.
