Canopy Walk Safari Of Rwanda Over Nyungwe National Park

In order to boost the tourism of Rwanda, in 2010 the Canopy Walk was established in Nyungwe National Park. This adrenaline stimulating adventure exposes you to the aerial view of the forest canopy and most of its beautiful surroundings.

The Rwanda forest canopy walk is 100 long and about 60 meters above the forest canopy. This canopy walk is divided into three sections but the middle section for anyone afraid of heights this would be the best option.

Before heading for canopy walk in Nyugwe National Park, you have registration, document clearing and briefing on Uwinka Reception Center after which a guide leads you through the walk. Learn about the does and don’ts of this adventure experience.

Following the ishishigishigi trail, you arrive at the starting point of the canopy walk. As you follow the trail, you get to see the largest D. R Congo Island called Ijwi Island situated with in Lake Kivu that Rwanda also shares.

During canopy walk you get to enjoy the incredible look of the forest top, watch a number of birds including rare Albertine endemics, the incredible mountain cover that creates a perfect scenery to mention but a few.

After completing this canopy adventure, you may choose to take the trail through which you came. Another option is using the Umuyove trail which makes the roundtrip of this experience.

After chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National park, you may include the canopy walk which is the only one of its kind in the entire East Africa. Adventure travelers celebrate some of their special moments on this canopy to make memories that will last a life time.

What is the age limit for Rwanda canopy walk?

Children 7 years and above are allowed on this Rwanda Canopy Walk as long as they are in the company of an adult. Taking family adventures is time to make family memories that will last a life time. Only 8 people are allowed to take the canopy walk at a time.

When does the Rwanda Canopy walk start

Each day the canopy walk starts at 9 am when the view has become clearer and fog has reduced. This area is normally cold especially in the early morning hours before sun rise.

What Else To See During Canopy Walk In Rwanda

A number of primates enjoy the comfort of Nyungwe National park like the black and white colobus, vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, grey cheeked mangabey, red tailed monkeys, L’Hoest, olive baboons and so many other.

Thousands of birds flock the Nyungwe national park and during the canopy walk you may spot some of them especially is you have carried a pair of binoculars for a clearer view.

The tops of different mountains located in this area come into view during the canopy walk including those from neighboring countries like in Uganda and D.R.Congo. They are fully covered by vegetation creating a lovely scenery.

What To Pack For Rwanda Canopy Walk

A pair of comfortable tracking shoes to help you walk steadily during the canopy walk. At times it rains so the shoes must be capable of supporting you on a wet walk.

Carry you rain gears that will protect you from the rains that fall in this highly moist area.

Drinking water to keep you quenched throughout your trek.

A pair of binoculars to give you a clearer view of the surroundings of Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda.

Some warm clothes to keep you from getting cold as the area is so humid all day long.

Energy bites that support you when you get hungry during the walk. Do not however dump any wraps while at the top because this is destroying the nature of the environment.

A spare charged battery in case your camera battery runs low.

The pair of binoculars to give you a clearer view of the environment around the park.

6 day Gorilla Trekking, Chimpanzee And Canopy Walk Rwanda

Day One: Drive To Nyungwe national Park

After breakfast, your drive guide will pick you from overnight hotel and head to Nyungwe national Park. When you get there, take a walk around the close by lash forest cover of Nyungwe Forest. Take photos.

Day Two: Chimpanzee Trekking In Nyungwe National park

Early morning, head to the ranger station for briefing after breakfast. Chimpanzee trekking for early morning group starts as early as 5.00 am when the chimpanzees de-nest from there overnight location.

Follow the trail where they were seen the previous day and enjoy there presence when you locate them. Return to the lodge to relax.

Day Three Canopy Walk in Nyungwe National park.

 Get up early for breakfast and head for the canopy walk over Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda. This is the only one of its kind in East Africa. Enjoy the beautiful views of the forest cover and all its surroundings.

Take photos and make memories over this elevated walk way.

Return to your lodge.

Day Four head To Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, head to Volcanoes National Park the super home of Gorilla trekking in Rwanda. Enjoy the pretty environment around the park and put your belongings together ready for gorilla trekking.

Day Five Gorilla Trekking In Rwanda

Having packed your gorilla trekking gears, head to the ranger station for briefing. In case you missed packing the right gorilla trekking gears provision for hiring is available.

 After you are divided into gorilla trekking groups, follow your ranger guide and listen to instructions he passes over. Try not to drag the rest of the group behind although the ranger follows the slowest trekker.

Finally when you meet the gorillas, watch there behavior, take photos for memories but try not to deviate from the rules of gorilla trekking. Do not feed the mountain gorillas because they are wild.  Watch out for the silverback because he is the overall controller of the affairs of the gorilla family so with any mistake you make, he may lead the rest of the group into hiding.

After enjoying gorilla trekking in Rwanda, drive to Kigali Airport to catch up with your home bound flight.
