Gorilla tracking area is made up of volcanic action with ragged surface. During gorilla tracking, you may not find it difficult to walk through the forest as there are trails created by regular visitors. Gorillas live in the forest crisscrossed by a network of rivers and little sun rays are permitted to penetrate the ground because of the thick forest cover.

When you start the gorilla trek, you will be escorted by an armed ranger guide who follows the pace of the slowest trekker.

 What is Gorilla Tracking?

Gorilla trekking is the literary means the act of moving in the forest wilderness to find the mountain gorillas with help of any gadget (not a dictionary definition). Locally the Mountain gorillas only live in Africa and in the entire world are residents of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. Several gorilla census have been conducted and it is estimated that about 800 mountain gorillas still live.  They are residents of 3 forests that is to say Bwindi Forest in Uganda. Volcanoes forest In Rwanda and Virunga Forest in D.R.Congo

How To Get To The mountain gorillas

A gorilla tracking permit is the entry ticket to gorilla tracking and in Uganda gorilla permits are sold at Uganda Wildlife Education center, Rwanda gorilla permits are sold at Rwanda Development Board and In Congo.

To easily get access to the gorilla tracking parks, you may travel by road and also arrangements for Air transport can be made. In Uganda, there are daily scheduled flights from Entebbe airport to Kihihi Air strip and then you need to book a transfer vehicle to your lodge. You can also exclusively travel by chatter to the air strip in Kihihi and get a transfer vehicle that will take you to your overnight lodge.

What Is Unique about Mountain Gorillas

Mountain gorillas are believed to have existed with the dinosaurs during the prehistoric era.  There homes in Bwindi Forest, Volcanoes National Park and Virunga forest are also believed to be some of the remnants of this period. Because of there unique feeding habits, mountain gorillas currently live in only these forest as of today.

Mountain gorillas are giant primates, with dark fur and deem brown eyes which make them fierce at a glance however, they are one of the calm animals and shy in nature which makes them retrieve into the bushes when frightened. This is the reason why you are advised not to make anything that will scare them during gorilla tracking.

The gorillas are generally vegetarian and there best delicacy is bamboo, fruits, soft leaves, ants and soft tree backs. This diet may not match up with there enormous bodies which looks so huge.

Family life is so important to the mountain gorillas under the leadership of a silver back which is the dominant male. All males in the family must respect his command and even respect his females.

Communal infant up bringing is used to raise the infants. A family with infants guards them jealously especially the Silverback. During gorilla tracking, you are advised not to touch any infants through they look adorable. This is because it angers the rest of the family.

As a grieving family, mountain gorillas also take off some time when they loose a family member to mourn. In most cases they becomes dull, may disappear from sight for some moments to mourn, they dissert the area close to where there member has passed.

Just like human leadership, the Silver back will do anything in his strength to defend his power over the rest of the family. At times the Juveniles may want to take control of the family so he fights them sending away the disobedient to the wilderness. Most of the time age wares out the grown up mountain gorillas and they get defeated

Rules Of Gorilla Trekking

Do not Feed the mountain gorillas

When trekking to see the gorillas, lower your voice so that you do not scare them.

No dumping in the forest to keep the environment clean

Mountain gorillas are susceptible to human disease in case you have any communicable disease, you are requested to volunteer not to go so that the mountain gorillas are kept safe from disease.

If you need to ease yourself while in the forest, request your guide to make a hole for you and burry everything beyond recognition.

On one hour is permitted to be with the mountain gorillas. They were habituated to be in the presence of humans for just that one hour.
