On the day of gorilla trekking in Uganda you are required to rise up early to head to the ranger station. You begin with briefing at the ranger station where rules and regulations of gorilla tracking are explained to the trekkers. Later you are divided in to groups of 8 people based on your capability, age and fitness in order for you to enjoy. Gorilla tracking requires your active participation as you move in the forest to meet the about 10 to 30 members. Each family is under the leadership of Alpha male silverback who is chosen according to his ability to defend the family. The male have the responsibility of searching for new feeding grounds for the rest of the family.

Gorilla Tracking in Uganda can only be guaranteed upon obtaining the gorilla tracking permit from Uganda Wildlife Authority. Lately, gorilla trekking temporary cards with the details of the trekking personal like the Names, Nationality, Place of stay, Date of birth must be given out to replace the original paper permits.

To find the mountain gorillas in the field requires patience as they are very mobile primates. As you trek to find them a little patience is required to give you the chance of meeting the mountain gorillas. They are very distrustful of whoever moves in there habitat so you should keep silent or talk at a low tone to avoid suspicion and have a chance to make your dream come true

What is the best family for gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Uganda has about 15 gorilla families habituated for tracking however, these families are grouped into 4 sectors that is to say Buhoma gorilla tracking sector, Ruhija Gorilla trekking sector, Nkuringo gorilla trekking sector and Rushaga gorilla trekking sector. For reservation at the Uganda Wildlife Authority, one needs to know which sector is your preference.  This also goes hand in hand with the accommodation you wish to stay at. Incase you have a specific accommodation which you wish to stay at while on your gorilla safari, you must state this before booking a gorilla permit in any sector.

While at the ranger station after briefing, you are given any gorilla family to trek based on your ability, age and preference. This makes it quite a challenge to obtain a specific family.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Forest National Park involves trampling the vegetation to make your way to the gorillas. Even if you are in the wilderness, you must know that these animals are in there natural home so destroying there habitat denies them the chance of living freely and reduces on there feeding environment.

In case you eat anything on the way, do not dump garbage in the forest because this causes environmental damage and at times the animals may pick this waste and eat it which may be harmful to them.

How long is gorilla trekking?

Finding the gorillas has no specified time but depends on natural factors like proximity of there food, weather like in case it is raining, they also search for shelter, in case of a fight with a wild family, they move into the deeper ends of the park. These factors make the searching time for gorillas a challenge that cannot be solved. There is no gorilla family that is very difficult to trek and the easiest family to trek.

Also on the day of gorilla trekking, your ranger guide takes you through the trail where the gorillas were last seen the previous day. You follow that path first then you take on other trails later.

Remember the trails are quite slippery due to the regular rains and the rotting leaves that fall from the trees and makes the way quite boggy.  This walk is though interesting and eye captivating as you get to meet enchanting monkeys, rich albertine avian life to mention but afew.
