After gorilla tracking in Bwindi Forest National park, you may decide to spend a day in Entebbe town before embarking on your return flight. Entebbe is a peninsular with in Lake Victoria. It is a piece of land within Lake Victoria that is connected to the main land by a single strip of land. It is also the center for international flights as the Entebbe Airport is placed within this incredible town.
What to do In Entebbe Town
Guided Walk
After returning from Bwindi forest National Park, you may book a guided walk into the Uganda Wildlife Education Center the former Entebbe Zoo. In this center, animals are kept in exhibits where they feed on as the center has unique vegetation cover ranging from Savannah woodland to grassland and shrubs and arid conditions in some parts of the center. Its unique vegetation make-up favors the existence of numerous animals like the Rhinos, chimpanzees, Giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, lions, leopards, hyenas, countless bird species including shoebill and ostriches, tortoises, snakes, otters the list is endless.
Keeper For the day
This activity requires you to have spent a night in Entebbe so as to be part of the team that takes care of the animals. You start early in the morning with briefing and then proceed to the care taking center where you will be part of the cleaning team or the food supplying team. Jump on the tractor that supplies breakfast to the animals. Start cleaning the feeding troughs for the animals before adding the meal for the day. Take records of the animal behavior and watch them eat. Carry on with the day activities.
Behind the scene Tour
During this time at Uganda Wildlife Education Center, you are given extra chance to be with the feeding team although you do not participate in directly feeding the animals. Watch the behavior of the animals, interacting rate and have the chance to visit the pharmacy.
Chimpanzee Close-up
Chimpanzee close-up is an opportunity for you to spend some forest time with the chimpanzees. Be part of the day to day activities of the chimpanzee land which involves them coming closer to you, touch your hair, the infants may move out in to the bushes to stretch and you are allowed to be part of the day’s fun. To be part of this great adventure, you need to have been inoculated.
After briefing at the pier, you will sail to Ngamba Island the home of the rescued chimpanzees. These chimpanzees find home on this island after being rescued from snares, wildlife traffickers, abandoned in the forest, orphaned chimpanzees that cannot return to there communities. Participate in feeding the chimpanzees from the visitor platform and take a walk along the Island. There are normally morning and afternoon sections.
Enjoy A Sun downer on Fresh water Lake Victoria
Prepare for a super sun downer on Lake Victoria accompanied by a snack like wine and cheese, Vegetable of your choice, roasted African ground nuts, samosas and so much more as prepared by the chef. Watch the sun hide behind the horizons.
Visit the Reptile Village in Katabi
This is where several reptiles are reserved and fed like snakes, chameleons, tortoises, Monitor lizards, and so much more.
Visit Entebbe Botanical Gardens
Entebbe generally has cool forest cover but Entebbe Botanical gardens are so amazing. These have unique tree species and incredible primates like the vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, grey cheeked mangabey and so many others are residents. This is also habitat to several birds that roam in the forest. For quick birding experience before departure flight, head to the Botanical gardens for birding.
Visit the beaches on Lake Victoria
You may also experience the feel of Uganda beaches. The fresh air from the cool breeze provided by Lake Victoria is unmatched. Several beaches surround Entebbe like Lido Beach, Spinnah Beach, Aero Beach and so much more
Visit Ssese Island
Ssese Island can be reached by ferry at Nakiwongo pier. This Island has quite cool beached with water that is very clear, white sand beaches and bilharzia free water. The water is free from pollution and very nice to swim in. The forest cover of Ssese has an interesting historical tale that you will listen to while enjoying the freshness of Uganda. Lodges and camp sites at Ssese Island with incredible views can be booked for you if requested.
Visit The Entebbe Ya Mugwanya site
This is a traditional site with unique rocks that are believed have existed for several centuries. This point has a cave with a chair-like structure that is believed to belong to one of the demi- gods of Buganda Kingdom that ruled the Kyaddondo part of Buganda. The history behind this spot is mesmerizing.
Visit Entebbe Local Market
Take a tour to the local daily market center of Entebbe and get to interact with the local community. They are friendly and ready to talk about there day today activities. At times Entebbe has scheduled market days where items are displayed on the road side and it is always crowded. However this is done on specific day and not a daily market.
Walk To Entebbe Malls
Entebbe has several shopping mall that you can visit like the imperial city with interesting views of the lake. You can also visit the craft village in Entebbe to take a look at what is locally made in Uganda by the community.
